Several Helpful Tips For Occupational Therapists

Occupational therapy jobs are available in a big range of settings. These include infirmary, skilled nursing homes, home care settings, colleges, rehab facilities, and the like. OT’s have the chance to work with pediatric patients to geriatric patients, and everyone in between.

Since 2007, the Occupational Therapist must have a Masters, and there are some programs in which you can earn a doctorate. Starting pay for this and related careers ranges in the 60 thousand dollars and up range. Below is a list of suggestions for the Occupational therapist as they go about their daily routines :

1. You need to be able to sympathise with your patients, as they’re wrestling to recover something they have lost or to gain something they have not had.

2. Remember that your patient is experiencing discomfort, be light. Watch for scowls in their face to determine pain levels. Many people will not admit to being in pain.

3. Focus on your patient. Don’t allow yourself to get involved with conversations with other persons in the room. Your patient merits your total attention.

4. You could be having a bad day. Your patient’s day is worse. Do not make them suffer for anything you could be going through. Stay centered.

5. Help your patient maintain his/her dignity. If you are doing stuff like coaching in bath talents, or private hygiene skills, don’t make them show themselves to you any more than needed. If you’re doing the washing, be light, as some skin is terribly fragile and can be hurt or maybe torn with little effort.

6. Check with the patient to find out how he/she is feeling during each session. It allows them to know you care ; it enables you to do a quick health check ; and if they’re not well, you may need to shorten or cancel the session.

7. Ensure you completely document each session as soon as possible after the session while things are fresh in your brain. From both a legal and medical standpoint, it is crucial that the facts in the medical records be detailed and correct.

8. If you’re supervising Occupational care helpers, be certain you do it thoroughly and constantly. Some OTA’s may not have the high standards as you, especially the ones whose pay scale is significantly lower. There have been nightmarish tales told about OTA’s and their treatment to patients in nursing houses. Sad but true!
